Awards - Coach Robert Mitchell Named 2007/2008 Coach of the Year

On 1 March 2008, Melbourne PAL Coach Robert Mitchell was named the 2007/2008 Coach of the Year.  Coach Mitchell has a long-standing career of service with the Greater Melbourne Police Athletic League.  He served as the head coach for the 14 and under all-star basketball teams at the Florida State tournament in both 2007 and 2008 in addition to other coaching responsibilities.  In the Winter 2008 basketball league, Coach Mitchell coached 2 regular season teams volunteering to coach a 12 and under team for which a coach could otherwise not be found.  Coach Mitchell is a dedicated and valued member of the Melbourne PAL volunteer coaching staff who shows his dedication and leadership through his actions. 

Mr. Robert Mitchell is more than deserving of this award due to his tireless efforts and dedication toward the youth of the Greater Melbourne area.  Robert takes the time not only to teach players the game of basketball, but also to serve as a mentor in their lives.  His mentorship extends beyond the basketball season as his interactions create life-long relationships.  Robert is dependable and assists the Police Athletic League basketball program by coaching several teams, serving as a chaperone during travel events and even sweeping the gym floor between games.  He coaches the Regional and State All-Star Teams.  He coached a team during the PAL National tournament leading the Melbourne Bulldogs to an impressive second place finish.

Robert believes in teaching players the fundamentals of the game inspiring players to reach their full potential.  Parents have applauded Robert's leadership abilities and the impact he has had in the lives of his players.
